Equipment Type
Definition
A more specific classification within an equipment class that distinguishes items by their design configuration, operating principle, or application. Equipment type provides finer-grained grouping for reliability analysis and maintenance strategy. For example, within the 'Pump' equipment class, types include centrifugal single-stage, centrifugal multi-stage, reciprocating, and positive displacement.
Context
Equipment type determines the specific failure modes, maintenance tasks, and spare parts requirements. Different types within the same class may have significantly different reliability characteristics and maintenance needs. In Reliatic, equipment type is a sub-classification that refines the generic data applied from the equipment class level.
Examples
- Equipment type 'Centrifugal Pump - Single Stage, Overhung' has a specific set of failure modes (seal failure, bearing failure, impeller wear, coupling failure) distinct from 'Centrifugal Pump - Multi-Stage, Between Bearings'.
- Reliability analysis by equipment type reveals that reciprocating compressor valves fail 5x more frequently than centrifugal compressor seals, despite both being in the 'Compressor' equipment class.
Applicable Standards
- ISO 14224:2016
Related Terms
A categorization of equipment items by their generic type, construction, and function. Equipment classes group similar items for the purpose of applying generic reliability data, standardized inspection procedures, and common maintenance strategies. ISO 14224 defines standard equipment classes for the petroleum industry including pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, piping, valves, and instruments.
ISO 14224Petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries — collection and exchange of reliability and maintenance data for equipment. This standard defines a taxonomy for equipment classification, failure mode coding, and data fields required for reliability analysis. It provides a common language for recording failure events across organizations and installations.
Failure ModeThe specific manner in which a component, subsystem, or system fails to perform its intended function or performs it in an unintended way. A failure mode describes the observable manifestation of a failure — what goes wrong — rather than why it goes wrong (failure cause) or what happens as a result (failure effect). Each functional failure may have multiple failure modes.
