Asset Tag

Asset Management
mechanicalelectricalinstrumentation

Definition

A unique identifier assigned to each physical asset within a facility, typically following a structured naming convention that encodes the equipment type, process area, and sequential number. Asset tags enable unambiguous identification of equipment in the field, in documentation, and in management systems. They are physically affixed to equipment and referenced in all maintenance, inspection, and engineering records.

Context

Asset tags are the primary key linking physical equipment to digital records. A consistent tagging system prevents confusion, particularly in facilities with thousands of similar equipment items. In Reliatic, the asset tag is the human-readable identifier displayed throughout the interface.

Examples

  1. Asset tag HX-CU-101: HX (heat exchanger), CU (crude unit), 101 (sequential number). This convention immediately identifies the equipment type and location.
  2. A field inspection identifies untagged small-bore piping connections — a common finding that represents a gap in the asset register and a potential blind spot for inspection coverage.

Applicable Standards

  • ISO 14224:2016
  • ISA 5.1

Related Terms

Asset

A physical item of plant, equipment, or infrastructure that has value to an organization and is subject to management decisions regarding its acquisition, operation, maintenance, modification, and disposal. In asset integrity management, assets include pressure vessels, piping systems, storage tanks, rotating equipment, structural components, electrical equipment, and instrumentation systems. Each asset has an identity, a defined function, and documented attributes.

Asset Register

A comprehensive, structured inventory of all physical assets within an organization's scope of responsibility, containing essential information for each asset including unique identifier, description, location, classification, design data, material specification, operating conditions, and current status. The asset register is the single source of truth for the asset population and the foundation of all integrity management activities.

Nameplate Data

The technical information physically stamped or attached to equipment by the manufacturer, typically including: manufacturer name, model number, serial number, year of manufacture, design code, design pressure, design temperature, test pressure, material of construction, and any applicable certifications. Nameplate data is the primary source of as-built design information.

Functional Location

A position in the asset hierarchy that describes a function or location within a technical system, independent of the specific physical equipment installed at that position. Functional locations are permanent — they represent where a function is performed — while the equipment occupying that location may change over time. This separation enables tracking of maintenance history by location even when equipment is replaced.
